Informatics and Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators Essay

Florence Nightingale, arguably the most distinguished nursing theorist and scholar, together with several nursing scholars, worked so hard to make sure that their patients are well taken care of so that their conditions improve. Additionally, they ensured that their patient’s outcomes are measure. Nursing sensitive quality indicators were introduced to improve patient outcomes; one of the objectives of these indicators is to enable the evaluation and determination of patient illnesses and other issues that arise during nursing care.

Informatics and Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators Essay

Nursing-sensitive quality indicators are important during nursing care as they offer guidance for the assessment and evaluation of data based on a particular nursing indicator. There are several indicators used in nursing; the major indicators, however, include process indicators, indicators for outcomes, and structural indicators (Sage & Harris, 2018, Pp.885 Informatics and Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators Essay). These nursing indicators influence various aspects of patient care, including patient outcomes and safety.

NDNQI

NDNQI is an abbreviation for the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators. The NDNQI is basically a database that usually measures the quality of nursing care. After measuring the quality of nursing care, the NDNQI reports to the state, regional, and federal percentile distributors. The main objective of setting up this database is to develop a common framework for comparing data across all the healthcare facilities, which is part of the aim of improving quality (Heslop, Lu & Xu, 2014, Pp.2470 Informatics and Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators Essay).

Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators

Nursing sensitive quality indicators, as defined by Chasey et al., are factors the “reflect the structure, process, and patient outcomes of nursing care” Structure as a nursing indicator reflects the supply, education, and skills of the nursing staff. Process, on the other hand, refers to the assessment, interventions, and career fulfillment of the nursing staff. Outcomes as an indicator refer to the outcomes of the patients’ condition that can be improved with adequate and quality nursing care.

The Indicator that I Selected

From the several indicators, I selected one of the structural indicators, education. This indicator is important as it directly affects the quality of nursing care. Nurses derive their practice directly from education.

Why is this Quality Indicator Important to Monitor?

As stated above, education is an important indicator as all nurses derive their craft from education. It is therefore important to regularly monitor this indicator. Nurses are required to constantly update their knowledge as medical knowledge is constantly evolving. Facilities have an obligation to make sure that nurses have up-to-date knowledge and skills on particular tasks. Most institutions carry out staff training, for example, performing simulations for the nursing staff to learn and also as an avenue for monitoring this indicator.

According to Dubois, 2017 a high number of nursing staff with high levels of education and training is directly proportional to the positivity of patient outcomes. These positive outcomes include a reduction in the overall mortality of patients from certain conditions and the reduction of adverse outcomes related to the care. Reduction in the mortality rate and the improvement of the patient outcome as a result of a high level of education and train evidently show why this indicator is important to monitor. Reasons Why New Nurses Need to be familiar with this indicator

Just like in other medical professions, nursing knowledge and skills are constantly evolving; therefore, persons who are new to this profession should understand that education as a nurse will never come to a halt. Continuous nursing education is of benefits to both the nurse in terms of advancement in the profession and the patients in terms of the quality of care they receive. There exist patient safety indicators; these provide information on any potential safety concerns that can be avoided and provide an opportunity to improve on the delivery of care.

Education is connected to this indicator as it enables new and experienced nurses to foresee and avoid these potentially harmful events. With education, nurses are able to tell what can be avoided or if an event has already taken place; they can learn how to do things differently to avoid a future harmful event. Knowledge and nursing care for various conditions is constantly changing as there are various studies being done in addition to technological advancement. The aim of these advancements is to improve patient care and patient outcomes. To keep up with the new knowledge, skills, and technological advancement, new nurses should understand that the only way to keep up with this is with continuous education and training.

Collection and Distribution of Quality Indicator Data

According to the interview and other resources, how does the organization collect data on this indicator?

I carried out an interview with the nurse educator in the surgical department in my organization. Regarding the collection of data on this indicator, the educator informed me that she collects data and feedback from all classes and in-service training that are regularly conducted. The data is obtained from surveys that are usually emailed to the staff. The administrative assistants receive the results of the surveys, compile and analyze them before forwarding them to the nurse educators for viewing when needed.

Regarding the challenges encountered when collecting data on this indicator, the educator informed me that currently, the results they obtain are from a smaller population of the nursing staff as compared to previously. Informatics and Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators Essay. The decreased number of respondents can be attributed to the mailing of the surveys to the staff, unlike previously where each staff member was handed questionnaires after each class session or in-service training. With the mailing, the staff may accidentally delete the emails or even forget to look at the survey.

How does the organization disseminate aggregate data?

During the interview, I asked the educator how the data is shared in the organization, and she said that the information is not just shared with anyone apart from the various educators involved with that particular topic. She noted, “As an organization, the data form the questionnaires we obtain following a particular class is used to determine the effectiveness of the class or in-service training. The information is also used to determine what areas we need to improve on for future education.”

What role do nurses play in supporting accurate reporting and high-quality results?

Nurses are expected to participate inaccurate reporting and providing high-quality results when asked to fill out questionnaires. They should also fill out these questionnaires in a timely manner. Nurses can also give their feedbacks verbally in case they think this will provide an accurate and memorable way.

Competencies Role of Nurses and Interdisciplinary Team in Informatics

With the evolution of technology, nursing practice is increasingly adopting technology to improve patient outcomes. Among the numerous areas where nurses apply technology, informatics is one of them. Informatics is used not only by nurses by other interdisciplinary teams to collect nursing-sensitive quality indicators.

Using electronic health records (EMR), nurses and the interdisciplinary teams collect, manage, interpret and communicate data, all the data that flows into and out f the facility for one main purpose, which is improving the quality of care hence patient outcomes. One way these teams use electronic patient information in decision making and to collect nursing-sensitive quality indicators is through improved documentation. Informatics and Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators Essay

Documentation has always been an important pillar of inpatient care. Electronic documentation has a huge impact on modern-day nursing documentation as it is more effective and efficient. A huge number of documentation happens automatically as a result of the connection of devices which usually collect data in real-time then transmit this information to the patients’ records.

With improved documentation, nurses and the interdisciplinary teams are able to collect the relevant nursing-sensitive information more efficiently (Dubois et al., 2017, Pp.3161 Informatics and Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators Essay). Nurses and interdisciplinary teams also use electronic health information to improve coordination.

Nurses are generally required to coordinate with interdisciplinary teams such as doctors, pharmacists, and nutritionists during patient care. Informatics generally improves the efficiency of this coordination, thus improving patient outcomes. With efficient coordination, nurses can also collect the nursing indicators more efficiently, which in turn also contributes to the improvement of the quality of care.

Impact of Patient Care Technologies on Desired Outcomes

The use of patient care has a tremendous impact on the desired outcomes. Successful use of technologies has been shown to reduce medical errors associated with nursing care. Patient care technologies can provide information on quality indicators that can be used to prevent these errors; for example, they can be used to predict a drug interaction or an adverse reaction of a drug such as allergies. With this data, nurses can predict the outcomes and work to prevent these adverse outcomes.

Medical errors also lead to loss of revenue in excess of 40 billion dollars a year, and majority of these errors can be averted by the use of technology in patient care (Dubois et al., 2017, Pp.3160). With the automation of these technologies, nurses are able to improve their productivity as the technology improves on speed and efficiency. Application of technology improves the coordination of every one involved in patient care thus improving on the desired outcomes. Improved coordination nis important in the collection of quality indicators which are use to improve patient outcomes.

Recommendation of the Use of Technology to Enhance Quality and Safety Standards for Patients

Evidence based practice refers to the integration of evidence from studies, clinical skills and patient feedback. Evidence based practice enables nurses to improve quality of care by providing individualized care. The collection of nursing sensitive quality indicators, may be a form of research as that can be used by the nurses and the organization as a whole to make informed decisions during the care of patients. For example, nurses can predict the benefits or risks associated with a certain treatment option. Incorporation of technology improves the effectiveness of collecting the quality indicators which provide a basis for developing evidence-based practice. Evidence-based practice have been shown to improve patient safety, and satisfaction.

Informatics and Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators Essay Conclusion

To improve patient care, nursing practices need to be constantly evaluated. The NDNQI is used to provide a means of measuring the quality of nursing care. There are several nursing quality indicators that exist such as structure, process and patient outcomes. Nurses need to be familiar with education as a quality indicator as it is the foundation of all professions. The paper has provided and insight of how an organization collects and disseminates nursing indicators. Nurses and interdisciplinary teams play a vital role in the use of technology to improve patient outcomes.

Assessment 4 Instructions: Informatics and Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators

Prepare an 8-1 0 minute audio training tutorial (video is optional) for new nurses on the importance of nursing- sensitive quality indicators.

As you begin to prepare this assessment you are encouraged to complete the Conabedian Quality  Assessment Framework activity. Quality health care delivery requires systematic action. Completion  of this will  help you succeed with the assessment as you consider how the triad of structure (such as the hospital, clinic, provider qualifications/organizational characteristics) and process (such as the delivery/coordination/education/protocols/practice style or standard of care) may be modified to achieve quality outcomes. Informatics and Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators Essay

The American Nursing Association (ANA) established the National Database o( Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNOI@) in 1998 to track and report on quality indicators heavily influenced by nursing action.

NDNQI@ was established as a standardized approach to evaluating nursing performance in relation to patient outcomes. It provides a database and quality measurement program to track clinical performance and to compare nursing quality measures against other hospital data at the national, regional, and state levels. Nursing-sensitive quality indicators help establish evidence-based practice guidelines in the inpatient and outpatient settings to enhance quality care outcomes and initiate quality improvement educational programs, outreach, and protocol development.

The quality indicators the NDNQI@ monitors are organized into three categories: structure, process, and outcome. Theorist Avedis Donabedian first identified these categories. Donabedian’s theory of quality health care focused on the links between quality outcomes and the structures and processes of care (Grove et al., 2018 Informatics and Nursing Sensitive Quality Indicators Essay).

Nurses must be knowledgeable about the indicators their workplaces monitor. Some nurses deliver direct patient care that leads to a monitored outcome. Other nurses may be involved in data collection and analysis. In addition, monitoring organizations, including managed care entities, exist to gather data from individual organizations to analyze overall industry quality. All of these roles are important to advance quality and safety outcomes.

The focus of Assessment 4 is on how informatics support monitoring of nursing-sensitive quality indicator data. You will develop an 8—10 minute audio (or video) training module to orient new nurses in a workplace to a single nursing- sensitive quality indicator critical to the organization. Your recording will address how data are collected and disseminated across the organization along with the nurses’ role in supporting accurate reporting and high quality results.
