How does the concept of wisdom in nursing informatics compare to the concept of professional nursing judgment.
Wisdom in nursing involves making wise and effective decisions using an array of intelligence, data, knowledge and information. The reason for using wisdom in nursing is to arrive at a common good for the patient. Conversely, professional judgment in nursing means nurses using their training and education to make effective decisions. Judgement means using the best available solution for a problem or engaging a new solution to an existing problem.
While the two terms are distinct, there is a clear relationship between wisdom and professional judgment (McGonigle, 2017). The relationship between the two is that they both aid nurses in making effective, evidence-backed decisions. Wisdom involves the understanding, applying, and integrating service with compassion to achieve a common good. Professional nursing judgement involves application of knowledge, integration, interpretation, and understanding.
Wisdom is critical in nursing because it is essential in developing personal nursing philosophies. Such personal philosophies help nurses to adopt the right approach, values and culture in their profession. For example, wisdom leads to seeking and understanding the truth. Truth in the context of nursing practice, as Mosier, Roberts and Englebright (2019) argues, allows nurses to discover new solutions/concepts, theories and paradigms in relation to healthcare. Professional nursing judgement is a way of nurses to analyze and understand issues related to patients and make proper decisions in solving such issues.
What is DIKW and how do you use it in your practice?
DIKW (Data, Information, Knowledge and Wisdom) is a tool that is critical to the conceptual frameworks in nursing informatics. In nursing, decisions are made based on critical thinking guided by knowledge and evidence. Based on this analogy, it is critical that nurses have access to adequate knowledge and information in the process of care to make effective decisions and judgments that positively impact on the quality of care.
Tools such as the Clinical Decision Support (CDS) is one of the critical components that aid professional nursing judgment. This tool provides nurses with the knowledge and patient-specific information that help them to make proper decisions regarding patients’ care. Concerning information, data, patient information, and research forms some of the critical areas to acquire information that can be used to provide adequate solutions to patents’ problems.
In the context of data, DIKW perceives data as signs/symbols that can be given interpretation to give meaning to a concept. Data can be acquired from existing literature or studies. Thus, nurses have an array of sources of data that they can use to make effective decisions concerning their patient’s problems (Ng, Alexander & Frith, 2019). Equally, nurses are required to have good skills in data analysis and interpretation to make proper judgments when dealing with patients. Data from patient records form some of the most important sources of information for nurses. These data must be interpreted effectively to create better outcomes for nurses.
Technology plays a critical role in the transformation of the nursing and healthcare sector through improved quality services and patient outcomes. In light of the advancement in technology, nurses, like other professionals, are expected to equip themselves with informatics competencies critical to the provision of quality care to patients. They need to have nursing informatics (NI) skills that go beyond simple data mining and entry. Other critical areas that nurses can put their NI skills into use include clinical roles, management roles, and project management.

Virtual Simulation as an Advanced Practice Nurse Example
A virtual learning environment (VLE) encompasses web-based infrastructure and tools that facilitate interactions, engagements, real-time communication, and information sharing by bridging distance gaps. One of the most profound tools and systems under the VLE is a virtual simulation that enables reality recreation and virtual event depicted on the computer screen to promote education, skills and enhance knowledge retention (Padilha et al., 2019). Virtual simulation is a fundamental aspect in clinical settings because it enhances clinical reasoning, improves the experience, promotes learning, and guarantees self-efficacy.
The Experience of Using Virtual Learning as an Advanced Practice Nurse
As an advanced practice nurse, developing relevant clinical skills and competencies requires consistent information, exposure to different clinical settings, and scenario understanding. Undoubtedly, the desire to update skills and bolster experience requires benchmarking, learning, and consultation with senior clinicians. Traditionally, clinical learning and benchmarking opportunities faced constraints because of geographical distances and logistical issues. Today, engaging in clinical learning and benchmarking is possible because of emerging technologies and infrastructure powered by artificial intelligence and machine learning.
A clinical virtual simulation is a fundamental tool in promoting real-time learning, consistent information sharing culture, and interdepartmental collaboration. Virtual simulation proved effective during the COVID-19 pandemic because it allowed complete essential tasks like personal protective equipment training, intubation and airways management, emergency code training, probing simulation, and ventilator management training (Pan & Rajwani, 2021).
Undoubtedly, it would not be entirely easy to complete these tasks without virtual simulation because of movement restrictions and social distancing protocols. Therefore, virtual simulation enabled us to save lives and enhance our competencies for disaster preparedness. From now on, I will utilize virtual simulation tools and virtual learning opportunities to enhance my skills, understand clinical scenarios, and collaborate with other professionals to deliver quality healthcare services to patients.
