What arguments would you use to make the case for the policy?

The policy would postulate that sugared beverages have a devastating effect on health which stretches the burden on public health systems. For instance, consumption of sugared beverages is heavily associated with an increased risk of overall cancer and breast cancer (Chazelas et al., 2019). Similarly, intake of sugared beverages has been correlated with increased incidence of obesity, weight gain, and diabetes as well as metabolic syndrome (Borges et al., 2017). Consequently, taxing sugared beverages will increase their cost lessening their affordability and consumption. Likewise, the government will be able to mobilize additional funds and resources through taxation.

What arguments would your opponents make?

First and foremost, the opponents would argue that the government is deliberately pushing their business out as the demand for sugared beverages would decrease due to higher prices and hence a disequilibrium in the market forces. Arguably, the opponents would need justification for the causation of obesity, cancer, weight gain, and diabetes. They will argue that the above conditions are multifactorial and involve an interplay of both genetic and environmental factors. Finally, they will argue that the consumers have the right and autonomy to make market choices that should be respected. For instance, they selected consumption of sugared beverages despite the evidence in the literature of their harmful effects.

How would you go about getting buy-in for your proposed policy?

Obtaining buy-in for the proposed policy encompasses requesting assistance from multiple groups and stakeholders who influence legislation. These stakeholders and groups would be responsible for laying down the desired agenda and advancing it into legislation (Nguyen Long et al., 2019). However, these groups and stakeholders must be extensively informed about the proposed policy, its benefits and given time to comprehend (Nguyen Long et al., 2019). Subsequently, the proposed policy will be discussed and revised to ensure it receives support from the majority of stakeholders while accomplishing the intended goal. As such. attaining buy-in for the proposed policy may require a revision to incorporate the comments and interests of the stakeholders before legislation.

What stakeholder groups need to be involved in promoting your policy?

A variety of groups such as special interest groups, market forces, media, crisis, fiscal pressure, personal experience, political ideology, research, and constituent groups will form the priority of involvement as they impact the legislation (Nguyen Long et al., 2019).
