Informative Speech Outline on Importance of Sleep

The Importance of Sleep

Mortals have come to value time so much that sleep is considered as an annoying interference or rather a wasteful state that one enters whenever there is inadequate willpower to work harder and longer. Nevertheless, the importance of sleep cannot be overemphasized. The evaluation of the electroencephalogram (EEG) patterns that occur during sleep resulted in staging of sleep as well as discerning the abnormalities of sleep deprivation (Worley, 2018). In this speech, I will inform my audience about the importance of sleep on health, sports, academics, and public safety.


Inadequate sleep is associated with poor health outcomes. The relationship between sleep and health has been extensively investigated. At present, the researchers are deeply probing the cellular and subcellular effects of disrupted sleep. Garmy et al. (2018) in their study, for example, found that 40% of children received insufficient sleep (<9hrs) out of which 18% were obese. Worley (2018) on the other hand concludes that insomnia and mental health problems share a bidirectional relationship. Worley (2018) further associates sleep disturbances with cardiovascular diseases, hormonal dysregulation, impaired immune system, impaired metabolism, and type 2 diabetes.

Adequate sleep is associated with good academic performance. Parameters of sleep such as quality, duration, and consistency have all been related to academic performance. Okano et al. (2019) found out a significant positive correlation between the mean duration of 7 hours 8 mins and sleep quality throughout the semester with the overall academic score. In this study still, there was a significant negative relationship between sleep inconsistency and the overall score. Worley (2018) clearly highlights that sleep is necessary for the formation of memories as well as waking cognition and attention all of which are fundamental to academic performance.

Adequate sleep also is important for public safety. Inadequate sleep (due to work schedules, chaotic lifestyles as well as sleep disorders ) has been associated with industrial accidents together with road traffic accidents. Industrial disasters such as the Exxon Valdez oil spill was attributed to inadequate sleep (Worley, 2018). Gottlieb et al. (2018) discovered that 222 (6.9%) out of 3201 reported at least one motor vehicle crash accident and concluded that sleep deficiency due to sleep apnea or less sleep duration was strongly associated with motor vehicle crashes in the general population independent of self-reported excessive sleepiness. Vargas-Garrido et al. (2021) concluded that sleep quantity despite being neglected was associated with more commuting than workplace accidents consequently recommending prevention measures such as sleep hygiene.

Lastly, sleep plays a crucial role in sports. Athletes should try to balance their time to get enough rest in the name of sleep. Copenhaver and Diamond (2017) advise young- student-athletes to balance multiple demands on their time not to compromise sleep as inadequate sleep increases the risk for traumatic sports injuries, acute illnesses, and chronic illnesses. Copenhaver and Diamond (2017) further advise the athletes to schedule their training sessions and competitions so as not to interfere with circadian and homeostatic rhythms for maximal athletic performance. Similarly, Watson (2017) advocates adequate sleep for the recovery of athletes.


In conclusion, there is overwhelming evidence both in literature and in practice indicating the significance of adequate sleep. Good health, good academic performance, public safety, and even good athletic performance are all directly correlated to adequate sleep duration, quality, and consistency. Future investigations and research should recommend good sleep hygiene as well as emphasize the importance of sleep.
