Henderson and Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory

Critical thinking and comprehension of the necessary theoretical basis are essential for advanced nursing practice. It may be defined as the practice of promoting human health in a social environment. Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory organizes nursing professional practice into four basic operations: diagnostic, prescriptive, therapeutic, and case management (Yip, 2021). Diagnostic activities in nursing theory relate to the classification and prognosis of self-care requirements, which must take into account the influence of fundamental capabilities and dispositions, as well as basic conditioning variables, on the patient’s self-care capacity.

This diagnosis is used by the APN to direct their prescriptive operations, determining the practical activities needed based on the patient’s state of health, way of everyday life, and environmental limits, as well as health or other goals(Yip, 2021). The required activities are carried out immediately by the APN through therapeutic and supervisory operations.

Henderson’s nursing need theory focuses on four key concepts: the individual, the environment, health, and nursing.  Individuals, as per Henderson, have basic requirements that are aspects of health. They require aid to gain health and independence, as well as help to die peacefully (Petiprin, 2020). Mind and body are intertwined and interconnected for the person, and the individual examines the biological, psychological, social, and spiritual components. This idea views the patient as a collection of biophysical demands rather than a consumer. Individuals in connection to families are also part of the environment (Petiprin, 2020). Basic nursing care entails creating settings in which the patient can accomplish independently.

Henderson and Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory vary in their objective, scope, and goals. Henderson says in the principles of nursing, that a nurse’s responsibility is to replace the patient’s power, will, or knowledge as needed. The nurse is responsible for assessing the patient’s needs, assisting him or her in meeting health needs, and providing an atmosphere in which the patient may undertake independent activities (Gligor & Domnariu, 2020).

Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory is based on the awareness that diagnosis, prescription, and treatment are dynamic process that can only operate well if they are tailored to each patient’s requirements. This entails incorporating a viable course of action for optimal recovery into a patient’s everyday living habits while remaining mindful of budgetary and other healthcare service limits (Gligor & Domnariu, 2020). The function of the nurse within this nursing theory is to use practical nursing knowledge by identifying how a patient may best practice self-care within the constraints of their living arrangements and support services. The nursing theory that best suits my future nursing career is the Self-care deficit theory as it encourages cooperation between nurse and patient.
