Self-awareness is indispensable in improving the nurse-patient relationship and patient care. In this case scenario, patient P.A is a 28-year-old African American lady who is obese. She presented to the clinic with complaints of difficulty in breathing. On examination, her respiratory rate was 23 breaths per minute, temperature 36.60C, blood pressure 124/87 mmHg and she was saturating at 88%. Auscultation revealed wheezing in both right and left lungs with no added sounds. It was evident that she was in respiratory distress and from my past clinical practice, this was most likely to be an acute asthmatic exacerbation. Nonetheless, I ordered for appropriate tests to establish the diagnosis in accordance with the protocol of management of illnesses (Younas et al., 2020). The chest expiratory spirometry revealed an FEV1/FVC ratio of 0.68, which was moderately reduced. I started the patient on inhaled salbutamol via a nebulizer and co-currently administered oxygen via a face mask. The vitals improved remarkably, where the oxygen saturation rose to 96 % within 1 hour and the respiratory rate stabilized at 17 breaths per minute.
Interpersonal communication is equally an asset in patient care. With P.A., I had to maintain appropriate eye-contact while observing other cues of communication such as facial expressions, gestures and posture. I could note that during the consultation she was in distress and her facial muscles were contracting, particularly the frontalis and orbicularis oculi. She was actively participating in the consultation, as I observed from the questions she raised during the consultation (Sibiya, 2018). She stated that she had been on oral prednisolone since she was seventeen years old, which relieved her symptoms during an exacerbation. However, she was wondering why she had another episode that was not significantly improving on the prednisolone and whether an increment in dosage or addition of another medication would be required. I assured her I would consult with the care management team and combine their advice with the test results to devise an effective management plan.
Self-care is instrumental in promoting a healthy relationship with oneself and other professionals. Firstly, engaging in self-care results in positive feelings and augments the personal confidence and self-esteem that reminds the individual that he/she is important. With positive feelings and attitudes, the likelihood for engaging in unwarranted confrontations with other professionals is reduced (Nazareth et al., 2018). This state of events culminates in improved interprofessional relationships. Besides, self-care results in maintenance of a healthy work-life balance, which avoids overworking and its associated exhaustion and stress. Maintaining the balance is an asset in preventing development of psychological complications such as depression, anxiety, insomnia and heart diseases. The balance includes taking breaks via activities such as having lunch, strolls or calling loved ones, enabling the professional to stay sharp, motivated and healthy. The positive attitudes result in positive interprofessional interactions.
The importance of life management strategies cannot be overlooked. Stress management is among the strategies implicated. Whereas minute amounts of stress are effective in pushing professionals towards goals achievement, excessive stress and anxiety negatively affect physical and mental health. Healthy life management practices include eating healthy meals, connecting with loved ones, cutting down medication and engaging in actions that improve the mood and strengthen the personal confidence and energy (Gifkins, Jonston & Loudoun, 2018). Worth-noting, habits such as having adequate sleep and exercise would yield remarkable results in life management. Since life management strategies result in improved personal satisfaction, the ripple effect is enhanced competence at work and stronger interpersonal relationships. The latter would lead to increased motivation for personal work and team work, and achievement of goals within specified time, thus enhanced interprofessional relationships.
