Professional success requires advanced planning and a heavy investment of resources. Goals require resources such as funds, time, colleagues, and continuing education. My first goal as a healthcare professional is to orient and educate new hire nurses adequately and impact the relevant skills and knowledge to create better and knowledgeable home health nurse for the next 2years. By achieving this goal, I shall also be a better preceptor, one of the nurses’ roles. To achieve this, I require teaching plans and objectives, understanding the nurses’ objectives to ensure I align with them. Further, as Powers, Herron, and Pagel (2020 Part 1 Transition to Professional Nursing Practice) notes. preceptorship is essential in nursing practice and will be an excellent platform to remind me of the job’s basic requirements. Consulting other nurses who have been preceptors before is also integral. This role is a relatively new role to me. It will provide knowledge and skills relevant to the role, ensuring smooth learning.

My long-term goal is to become a family health nurse practitioner (FH-APRN) with advanced knowledge and skills in caring for family members of all ages ailing from different diseases by 2025. To achieve this goal, I shall require funds and create time for the new roles such as class attendance and clinical practicums.  I shall enroll for continuing education and ensure I obtain basic requirements for a family health nurse practitioner. By achieving this goal, I will adequately attend to family members’ needs without referring them to specialized care unless they need advanced medical attention. I will also give better healthy-living advice which will ensure better health outcomes for individuals and families. Being a highly trained family health nurse practitioner shall also increase my teaching skills for nursing students and new nurses interested in family health. Continuing education and competence are essential to the achievement of both goals. I need relevant knowledge to teach the newly hired nurses and enroll in a family health nurse practitioner program. I shall ensure I am conversant with the state’s continuing education and licensing requirements for FH-APRN. Continuing education is a prerequisite for professional development and advanced practice (Madan, 2020). In addition, I will ensure I engage the nurses in continuing education forums to equip them with the much-needed skills and competence. I shall also ensure I administer their assessments on time and provide feedback, pointing areas of improvement to promote their professional development.

Community service orientation is my biggest drive because I intend to give back to society by ensuring proper orientation of nurses to ensure they provide quality patient-centered care to the patients at the community level. The nursing profession’s values include quality health care services to all. With proper knowledge and skills, I will deliver more advanced care to the community members enhancing their holistic well-being. Essentially, this, as Karaca and Duma (2019 Part 1 Transition to Professional Nursing Practice) observe, entail indiscriminate quality healthcare service provision to community members of all ages, gender, and race. Advanced knowledge and skills will lead to better healthcare services to the population and thus an improved well-being and healthcare outcomes.

Good leadership, attention to detail, and effective communication are my greatest strengths, and they ensure I succeed in my roles.  I am good at instructing and coordinating care activities. These skills will be essential in fostering the much-needed knowledge and skills in the newly hired nurses. I will also be an effective role model in fostering good nursing ethics and etiquette for their success in this field. My greatest weakness is that I get easily agitated when people do the wrong things repeatedly. This quality can negatively affect my interaction with the hired nurses. Poor interprofessional collaboration leads to poor quality delivery. In addition, it can foster negative stereotypes in the newly hired nurses, which can negatively affect their attitude toward the nursing profession and nursing professionals. Thus, I shall ensure I give those clear instructions and expectations to ensure they stay on course and do the right thing. In addition, I shall use my leadership skills to put emotions of the professional duties. I will also ensure I learn their weak areas beforehand use my communication skills to effectively teach them in their weak areas to help them avoid making mistakes repeatedly. My most significant opportunities are few family health practitioners in the region and numerous sources of scholarships for the Master’s program. The number of family health nurse practitioners in this region is few. Thus, advancing as a nurse shall enhance my competitive advantage, leading to career development and achieving other professional goals. I shall utilize the scholarship opportunity to ensure I study without financial problems. It will also help me overcome my greatest threat; finances. My children are in high school and college, and I spend a lot on their fees. Thus, inadequate funds threaten advancing my education and achieving my goal of being a family health nurse practitioner. However, I shall use my communication and leadership skills to determine the requirements for the scholarship and ensure I meet them. Professional planning is integral to career growth. Having set goals and accompanying objectives ensures an individual stays focused. Understanding one’s strengths and weaknesses allows one to utilize strength to build their goals and minimize their weaknesses to achieve their goals.
