Core competencies for all healthcare professionals.

The core competencies for all health care workers include delivering patient-centered care, teamwork and collaboration, making use of evidence-based practice, applying quality improvement and the use of informatics. Patient-centered care entails the provision of health care in a manner that is both respectful and in response to the patient’s needs, values and preferences (Kuipers, 2019 Professional Nursing Essay Example). It encompasses various principles that include respect for the patient’s preferences and values, acknowledging the fact that each patient is an individual in his or her own unique way and involving them in decision making while also respecting the decisions they make. It also involves the education of the patient on their condition, their prognosis and the progress they have made. Equally important is the need to involve both family and friends in the decision-making process as they are important in providing emotional support and are also care givers.

Teamwork and collaboration entail the ability to work efficiently with nurses and other healthcare providers while ensuring good communication, maintaining the highest level of respect and engaging each other at various stages of decision-making to ensure that the patient receives high quality care. Proper teamwork and collaboration help in ensuring that patients have access to the best possible care. This is made possible by reducing the number of burnout cases involving nurses thus improving clinical performance while also reducing the number of medical errors made. Evidence-based practice is an honourable, solution-finding approach that encompasses evidence from well conducted studies, patient’s principles and preferences and the health care provider’s knowledge and experience in making decisions about care to be conferred to a patient.  Evidence-based practice ensures that nurses make well-founded decisions and thus consequently provide the best care to the patient.

Applying quality improvement is the use of data to continuously examine the outcomes achieved by the various processes of care while using different avenues to consistently examine the quality of care provided and thereafter make an improvement on the quality and safety of the health care systems. Quality improvement helps in improving the safety, effectiveness and the efficiency of health care provide (Mills et al., 2019 Professional Nursing Essay Example). Informatics involves the use of technology and data to elevate the standards of quality and safety of health care provided to a patient. With the technological advancement witnessed globally, the use of informatics enables health care organisations and health care providers a platform to collect, store and analyse patients data easily and in a more effective manner than before, thus having an impact on how care is provided and how resources are utilised in a health care setting.

Professional characteristics of nursing.

Some of the professional characteristics of nursing described by the American Nurses Association include autonomy, accountability and responsibility. Autonomy entails ensuring the patient has all the necessary information concerning his condition that is required to make a well-informed choice about the medical care they will receive (Hedman et al., 2019 Professional Nursing Essay Example). This implies that patients, having been provided with all the necessary information, are capable and able to make sound decisions without being influenced by any individual.

Accountability involves taking responsibility for one’s decisions, actions and omission, being competent all the time and maintaining the highest professional standards while being answerable to those above. Accountability encompasses four key pillars; professional accountability, ethical accountability, legal accountability and employment accountability. Accountability is demonstrated by providing safe and quality care, adhering to guidelines laid out, following procedures and maintaining the highest level of responsibility. Responsibility, on the other hand, is the obligation to carry out tasks and duties using sound professional decision making and being answerable for choices made while carrying out these tasks. A nurse must always be responsible for his or her actions or lack of and must be ready to accept the consequences accompanying his decisions.

Definition of nursing.

The American Nurses Association defines nursing as the protection, promotion and optimization of health and abilities, the prevention of sicknesses and injury, the alleviation of suffering through diagnosis and treatment of human response and the advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities and populations (Hockenberry, 2018 Professional Nursing Essay Example).

Promotion of health

Health promotion to me as a nurse entails the promotion of behaviour among individuals that empower and engage them to pursue healthy lifestyles that reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases and other illnesses. Some of these behaviours include adoption of a healthy diet, regular exercises and regular check-ups.  For my patient and family members, I try to educate them that health promotion entails more than just disease prevention. That it entails one’s behaviour and lifestyle. This is because health is simply not the absence of disease, but rather a state of physical, mental, social and emotional well-being. For most cultural groups however, health promotion to them simply means disease prevention or treatment of illnesses by taking medication when one is sick.

Prevention of illness and injury

Illness and injury prevention entails provision of a safe and healthy workplace free of any hazards, a goal achieved through education of staff and patients about hazards around the workplace (Oakman et al., 2018). Another way to achieve injury and illness prevention is by use of facilities and equipment such as hand washing stations, sanitizers and others to help in controlling hazards at the work place. The other way is by implementation of policies and guidelines to be followed by staff members and patients to aid in the prevention of diseases and injuries. For most groups, illness and injury prevention simply means the use of medication to prevent illnesses or the use of practices such as handwashing to curb diseases.

Human response

Human response is an important aspect that entails the physical, social, emotional and spiritual aspects of a human being. It is important for me as a nurse to appreciate and identify with all these aspects of my patients. I am not only treating his physical symptoms, but I am also having a large impact on his overall well-being. This is contrary to common belief who only see the nurse as relieving physical symptoms only.

Actions demonstrating conscious caring

Among the key principles of nursing are commitment, compassion, competence, conscience, and confidence. Commitment entails dedicating oneself despite the various challenges in life in one’s workplace is key in showing commitment. Another way of demonstrating commitment is by continually improving one’s knowledge and skills by pursuing higher education. Compassion, on the other hand, entals empathizing with patients and providing considerate care at all times is one of the ways of demonstrating compassion at the workplace. Conscience, as a key pillar, involves delivering the best possible care to the patient and aids in guiding one’s actions even when focus on personal matters challenges the consistent application of the best practices (Farahani, 2018 Professional Nursing Essay Example).

Within the nurse workplace setting, one can demonstrate competence always being early for work, carrying oneself in a professional manner and asking for help when one is unsure of what to do or how to perform a certain procedure. Finally, confidence is the one trait that ties all the others together. Confidence at the work place when talking to patients and when carrying out various procedures helps build the patients’ belief in the health care provider. In my own nursing practice, I always try my best to demonstrate all the above. I demonstrate my competence by always arriving early, dressing appropriately each day and performing all tasks assigned to me with due diligence.

Domains of personal nursing philosophy

Guiding my nursing philosophy are such pillars as patient safety, provision of patient-centred care and the need to provide timely, standard care, as well as effectiveness in care provision. Focusing on patient safety ensures that patients suffer no harm from the care that is intended to help them. My goal in providing patient-centered care entails the provision of care in a manner that is both respectful and responsive to the patient’s needs, preferences and believes. Finally, my objective with providing care in a timely manner aims at reducing and avoiding delays for both those providing and receiving care helps to ensure provision of standard care. Efficiency is another key domain that seeks to prevent wastage of both equipment, time ideas and energy is critical in the provision of quality health care. In terms of effectiveness, I intend to continuaaly provide care based on scientific knowledge to those who can benefit and to optimize resources for the overall patient benefit.

Conclusion

As broached in this essay, nursing is one of the most noble professions, though one that requires commitment, compassion, competence, conscience, and confidence. It entails holding oneself to the highest possible professional standards and providing healthcare to all without fear or favour. The role of a nurse is to ensure that he or she provides the best possible care while still respecting the patients’ values and preferences while also ensuring that the patient is well informed about his condition so as to make sound decisions.
