Summary Paper on the Public Policy Meeting
The purpose of the meeting, key participants, key agenda items, and meeting logistics
The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the Covid-19 vaccine BLA safety and the efficacy data. Also, the meeting focused on getting public comments about the updates on myocarditis and pericarditis following the Moderna Covid-19 vaccination. There is also an update on the myocarditis outcomes. The meeting also had some updates on the clinical considerations about the Canadian experience and the evidence with the Covid 19 vaccine primary series that was extended in intervals (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2022).
The meeting discussed updates on international data and policies and the summary and workgroup interpretations. Some key participants include public comment speakers discussing different topics and giving their output and ideas about them. The public comment speakers are representatives of the National Consumers League, the Transplant and Immunology Patient Advocacy group, Texas Children’s Hospital, and McMaster University in Canada(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2022).
The meeting was well planned since the public comment speaker’s ad applied before. Following this, they were prepared to comment. Also, the speakers were given enough time to discuss their contributions fully. They were advised to keep time so that the meeting would be orderly and avoid confusion and chaos. The moderator was very orderly as she called each speaker at a time. Besides, the speakers are clear and loud enough; hence one does not need to strain to listen.
Background information and a description of the committee
One of the committee members available was Dr. Helen Keipp Talbot, an associate professor of Medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases and an Associate Professor of tee alt Policy at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Talbot is an internist and infectious diseases specialist. Her research focuses on immunizations and the ae spectrums from children to adults, though she greatly emphasizes the adults.
Another committee member is Lyn Bata, who serves as the clinical expert at the Minnesota Department of health. Ms. Bata has over 25 years of immunization for both children and adults. She operates both in public health and the local sectors. Beth P. Bell is another committee member who is a clinical officer in the global health department (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2021). She makes great efforts in improving work in tea res of pandemic preparedness and global health security.
Most of her career has been spent in government service at the CDC. Another committee member is Oliver Brooks, the Chief Medical Officer at the Watts Healthcare Corporation in Los Angeles, California. He has worked for more than 15 years in different leadership roles. However, its main focus has been on the disparities in the vaccine coverage rates.
One specific topic that was discussed at the meeting and an explanation of the committee process
One of the topics discussed is the updates on myocarditis and the pericarditis following the Moderna Covid 19 Vaccination. The topic involved discussion on the reporting rates of myocarditis following the Moderna vaccination. Also, the care and outcomes of persons aged 18 years and above with myocarditis after the Moderna vaccine was given.
The speaker started by defining Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), the nation’s early warning system for vaccine safety. VAERS accepts reports from everyone, and then the reports are analyzed to ensure they are authentic before any step is taken. Some of the key strengths of VAERS is that it can rapidly detect potential safety problems. As a result, the problems are dealt with early enough before they worsen.
The strength is that it can detect rare adverse effects; hence, the team can deal with them before more people are affected. Some of the key limitations include a passive surveillance system and inconsistent quality and completeness of the information.
Following this, it becomes hard for the team to do follow-ups. Another weakness is reporting biases and failure to determine the cause and effects. Without causes and effects, it is hard to develop a solution. Since the country started giving vaccines, 6.6 million total doses have been given (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2022).
Also, the reporting rates after the second dose are consistently higher than the reporting rates after the first dose. This topic is important because it shows how the team responded to the pandemic and the citizens responded to the vaccinations.
An analysis of the key stakeholder positions related to the topic discussed.
Some of the key stakeholders in the meeting include the local community and the public. Also, government representatives are giving an update on the progress made since the pandemic started. The government representatives include the department of veteran affairs, Indian health services, and the department of defense.
Some suppliers and vendors are involved in ensuring that all the security measures regarding Covid 19 have been adhered to. Also, suppliers of the Moderna vaccines and other Covid 19 facilities and resources help fight against Covid 19. The committee members are available to ensure that they take notes and follow up on the updates given by other key stakeholders.
Key interactions that occurred at the meeting
The critical interactions of the meeting are that the entire participants were able to deliver i8nformation as speculated. All the people who spoke during the meeting could explain their different topics. The moderator was very orderly, and the meeting maintained order throughout. All the people that were supposed to speak during the meeting were available, and they spoke about their specific topics and the progress made ever since the pandemic started.
The speakers used PowerPoint presentations to show evidence of their data in slides so that people could understand it easily. For example, Dr. Talbot summarizes the VAERS findings, which show that 164 million total doses of Moderna Covid-19 vaccine (doses 1 and 2) have been given to persons who are 18 years and more by January 13, 2022 (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2022). Through the slides, the people can even take notes and understand better about the numbers.
Outcomes of the meeting, including the specific topic focus
Dr. Talbot provided the meeting summary by highlighting the objectives of the COVID 19 Vaccine Safety Technical (VaST) Workgroup. The objectives so far have been met, and she explains that VaST will continue to review the Covid 19 safety data from passive and Active surveillance systems.
Through this, it will be easy to collect relevant data from all departments like VAERS, VSD, FDA BEST system, Indian Health Services, and the Department of Defense (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 2022). The specific topic focus was to explain how the CDC has dealt with the pandemic and how society responds to all the vaccinations. Still, the plans to ensure that the pandemic is kept at bay are in place.
