Most children grow interest in certain sports that may be harmful to them later in life but participating in sports also promotes the child’s health, builds confidence and can also maintain the child’s mental health. These consequences that may arise later in life should not stop children in engaging in certain games but needs to be done safely. For parents who want to involve their children in sports that may lead to repeated trauma, I would advise them to first familiarize themselves on what sports thier child is going to play. Familiarizing themselves may help these parents to be prepared for injuries that may arise later.

It is important for children to use helmets in sports that involves head repeated trauma. Parents need to ensure that they purchasing helmets for their kids and also make sure they are wearing them because primary prevention should always be the top priority. A study done by Bailly et al, 2018 showed the effectiveness of helmets in protecting users from head injuries.

Children are also bound to suffer concussions from these games and it is very important for these parents to educate themselves about concussions. It will be very helpful if parents are able to tell the signs and symptoms of concussions and when it is safe or not for their children to return to playing. Parents can utilize websites such as the Center for Disease Control (CDC) (cdc.gov/concussions) to educate themselves as they provide resources on concussions which includes several videos and targeted tip sheets for specific activities for specific groups such as parents.
