Reflecting on my previous score, it is evident I was above average. Areas of strength include health promotion, physical assessment and scope of practice. This is evident through the exemplary scores under those sections. However, my performance in some topics was poor. This includes diagnosis, treatment, pathophysiology and regulatory requirements. Additional areas that need improvement include pharmacology, nursing epidemiology, psychopharmacology and professional role and policy topics such as quality improvement, safety and leadership. In preparation for my certification examinations, I will establish a work plan for use, with a timetable, to direct and guide my rational revision style before examinations.

I plan to review my study tips to boost my retention and understanding prior to the exam. I intend to review study tips shared to us previously and borrow additional information from the board website. I will thereafter collect and acquire all study materials, resources and utilities I require for the entire revision time prior to the exam. I will establish a continuous and independent discussion group with course mates, and agree on specific discussion time, place and time span. This preparation will facilitate defining my timetable. I intend to have all these preparations done in three days to initiate my revision program.

I will review all relevant materials and resources as guided by my timetable, in preparation of the certification exam. I will utilize the books I have purchased, provided course books such as Foundations of Advanced Practice Nursing. I plan to utilize the Fitzgerald review to boost areas that I previously scored low. I will also spend my late evenings reviewing pharmacological principles section using the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Review Manual. I will also take practice quizzes daily, with intent to score above 90%. I will thereafter review rationales for questions that I fail or struggle to score to improve competence.

I plan to take regular assessments over the course of the review until am confident with my preparation. I plan to take exams present in the PMHNP-BC pocket application and daily quizzes. My intended score from every test is above 90%, after which I will review rationale for answers provided. I will also analyze topics or subtopics in which I repeatedly score poorly and review them exhaustively. Being prepared for the exam is imperative to passing the test; hence this will be my focus. I will also utilize reflective essays to facilitate understanding of concepts and materials. I will employ note taking to enhance memory span.

Additional study techniques will include days off to relax my mind and engage in other activities. This will reduce pressure on brain functioning, and hence improve memory (Aritzeta et al., 2017 Psychiatry Study Guide Sample). Utilizing a spacing effect by working with two sessions a day will also boost material coverage, preparation and content retention, other than end-to-end cramming. Weekly evaluations of the topics covered and average scores in the quizzes will help identify areas of concern and any need to review the plan. Drugs, scales and lists that need to be memorized will be identified and started in day 1 to give time to derive mnemonics, learn them and recall them. I intend to write these mnemonics in flashcards for easy retrieval and confirmation even during the day program.
