Introduction
Leaders in healthcare settings play integral roles in the success of healthcare organizations. They manage human and material resources and ensure organizations comply with the set rules and regulations, thus, understanding healthcare organizations better. Interviews with healthcare leaders can produce reliable information on current and past problems, which aids in improvement projects. This essay analyzes the results of an interview with a healthcare leader, identifies a healthcare issue, and highlights interventions necessary to solve the problem. In addition, it analyzes an important change theory and effective leadership strategies useful in the success of the chosen intervention.
Interview Summary
I interviewed Dr. Smith, the nursing services manager at the Waterfront Nursing Home. Due to the limited time, I had with him due to his busy schedule, I ensured that I organized my interview questions well, outlined my goals and objectives, and ensured my questions were straightforward and organized chronologically. During the interview, I paid attention to verbal and non-verbal cues and sought clarity where I did not understand. I also maintained eye contact during the interview. At the end of the interview, I thanked him for his time and provided feedback on my interview, and he confirmed that the information I had gathered was true.
Dr. Smith identified his roles as managing daily patient flow, employing and managing staff, handling nursing staff discipline issues, and overseeing improvement projects. He mentioned several current issues affecting the nursing profession and the organization. He explained that elderly patients form the bulk of patients are elderly. Dr. Smith highlighted several issues that were of great concern to these patients. During the interview, patient falls among the elderly, medication errors, staff shortage, and a high nurse turnover rate were his main problems.
Issue Identification
Patient falls among elderly patients require interventions from a multidisciplinary approach. Patient falls are often sudden, unpredictable and cause high healthcare costs. They are caused by neurological, musculoskeletal, and environmental factors such as slippery floors (Greene et al., 2019). Patient falls are unpredictable, and patient monitoring is mainly a nursing role.
However, other healthcare providers, such as doctors and pharmacists, are integral in determining the risk of falls (such as certain medical conditions and current medications). In addition, doctors are pharmacists integral in prescribing patients medications and other care interventions, and thus, their involvement in patient care is integral. Identifying and preventing falls among elderly patients thus requires a multidisciplinary support team for its success.
Change theories That Could Lead to an Interdisciplinary Solution
Kurt Lewin developed the three-stage change theory is the most formidable theory in this situation. It entails three major concepts that are driving forces, restraining forces, and equilibrium. The three-stage theory entails three stages; unfreezing, moving, and refreezing. The first stage entails determining the need for change, communicating it, determining restraining factors, and mitigating them (Hussain et al., 2018).
The second stage entails facilitating change by supporting staff and availing necessary resources. The last stage, refreezing, entails enhancing acceptance of the change and incorporation into the organizational policies. The change theory provides a framework for healthcare professionals to track change by determining areas that require change, convincing influencing participation by other healthcare providers; hence it is the most reliable theory (Hussain et al., 2018). The resource used is current, presents accurate information, and is relevant to the study.
Leadership Strategies That Could Lead to Interdisciplinary Solution
Leadership strategies significantly employed determine the success of an interdisciplinary team. Employee support and clear vision are effective strategies to employ alongside the three-stage theory in this case. The best leadership strategy is the democratic leadership strategy (John, 2020). In this strategy, healthcare team members are given equal rights and chances in decision-making.
Democratic leadership creates a sense of importance and belonging to the team, which improves collaboration. The members are also encouraged to air their concerns freely, and hence no intervention is overlooked. The information cited is reliable and credible because it was published less than five years ago and in a reputable journal.
Collaboration Approaches for Interdisciplinary Teams
Effective healthcare teams entail trust, collaboration, and respect. Interprofessional teams entail different professionals such as nurses, doctors, and pharmacists with different training and scope, and hence effective strategies are a prerequisite for their collaboration. The first strategy is clearly defining each team member’s roles to ensure no overlap of duties.
The second strategy is clear guidelines for delegating duties to each member’s scope of practice (Buljac-Samardzic et al., 2021). It ensures excellent performance if delegated roles. Effective conflict resolution methods are integral to any healthcare team (Brown et al., 2018). Conflicts always arise in relationships and interactions, especially between multidisciplinary teams. Thus, having effective and well-laid strategies for conflict resolution is integral.
The other strategy is staff training on effective collaboration. Training also provides a platform for introducing the healthcare team’s essential roles, goals, and objectives. In addressing the issue of falls, staff training is integral (Buljac-Samardzic et al., 2021). The articles are published by reputable journals, provide relevant information, and are produced within acceptable time limits.
Conclusion
As seen above, healthcare organizations are dynamic fields that require constant evaluation and implementation of evidence-based practices. As seen above, interviews with healthcare leaders provide vital information in enhancing change. Wearable technology is an effective evidence-based intervention to prevent patient falls. Kurt Lewin’s three-stage theory is also an effective model for change management in the dynamic healthcare sector. Leaders must also employ effective strategies such as employee training to enhance the success of a change intervention.
