Conflict in Healthcare Organizations Sample Paper

Overview of Conflict Prevalence in Healthcare Organizations

In healthcare organizations, conflicts usually occur between physicians and other healthcare staff, between the physicians and other healthcare teams, between the patients and their physicians, and between the physicians and patient families. Conflicts in healthcare range from minor disagreements to significantly complicated controversies that end up in litigation or, even worse, violence. Conflicts have a significant adverse effect on healthcare organizations’ morale, productivity, and patient care. Conflicts have resulted in a significantly huge employee turnover. In addition, conflicts limit the efficiency of staff contributions. Discussion: Conflict Resolution

Potential Causes of Conflict within Healthcare Organizations

There are specific triggers that cause conflicts in Healthcare settings. Some of the most common causes of conflict in healthcare organizations include organizational structure, lack of resources, misunderstanding, miscommunication, and lack of professional commitment. The causes of conflict in the context of health organizations might also be caused by disparities in professional values and economic values amongst healthcare staff. Limited resources might also cause conflicts in healthcare organizations, especially in organizations where there is a lack of clarity of roles and expectations. Competition amongst healthcare professionals can also be a trigger for conflicts in healthcare organizations.

Principles of Negotiation and Conflict Resolution Embraced by Nurse Leaders

Nursing leaders play an instrumental role in the prevention of conflicts in healthcare organizations. It is the nurses and the nursing leaders who create systems that prevent conflicts for the ultimate purpose of creating a healthy working environment for healthcare workers (Bronkhorst, 2017). Conflict resolution is particularly important in acute care settings because conflicts can result in stressful and chaotic environments. Nurses are trained to manage and prevent conflicts by embracing effective communication with other health care workers. It is paramount for the nurses to have an emphatic understanding of other healthcare staff. They do so by listening to the other parties. Nurses should create an amble environment for communication to occur, and this is what prevents conflicts in healthcare settings. Discussion: Conflict Resolution

An Effective Model/Leadership Theory for Conflict Resolution

Various models have been crafted to provide direction on how to avoid conflicts. The most common conflict resolution theoretical model is the one developed by Thomas and Kilman. According to this theoretical framework, conflict resolution should follow a 5 step strategic process of avoiding, compromising, defeating, collaborating, and accommodating (Tyler-Evans & Evans, 2016 Discussion: Conflict Resolution). This theoretical framework is based on the premise that people usually choose to be assertive and cooperative, especially when involved in a conflict. On the same note, transactional and transformational leadership models are effective in successful conflict resolution.
