As a baccalaureate-prepared nurse, you will be responsible for providing patient-centered, competent care based on current evidence-based best practices. You will be required to do research, analysis, and dissemination of best evidence to stay abreast of these best practices. Understanding where to go to find credible sources and locate evidence, as well as which search terms to use, is the foundation of incorporation of best practices.

Scenario

You are supervising three nurses working on the medical-surgical floor of a local teaching hospital. This hospital is nationally recognized as a leader in education and has a computer lab with an online library where staff has access to medical research databases (that is, CINAHL, PubMed, Medline, and Cochrane library) and online sources of all hospital policies, procedures, and guidelines, and computers at nurse workstations that also have access to these resources. (For this scenario, use the Capella University Library to simulate the hospital’s online library.)

You have given the nurses their patient assignments and you have all participated in shift report. A new nurse who just completed orientation and training a week ago approaches you and tells you that one of the assigned patients has a diagnosis he or she is very unfamiliar with. Knowing that patient-centered care based on best practices is imperative to positive patient outcomes, you want to assist this nurse to find research that can be utilized to provide the best care for this patient.

Describe how you would communicate with this nurse to encourage him or her to research the diagnosis. Assume you will assist in the quest to locate evidence, then describe where you would go within the facility and what resources you would look for. These resources may include websites, journals, facility policies or guidelines, or any other sources of online information.

You may choose the diagnosis for the patient in this scenario or health care issue/diagnosis of your choice. Or you may choose something you would find interesting to research or that applies to a clinical problem/diagnosis you would be interested in addressing. You are only evaluating the sources of evidence (database, website, policy database or website, journal article, et cetera). You are not actually completing a search and selecting evidence. Consider the following examples: a nursing journal in CINAHL may not be the best source of evidence for information on how to administer medications through a central-venous catheter, whereas a hospital policy database found on a website may not be the best source of information on caring for a patient with a rare chromosomal abnormality.

As a baccalaureate-prepared nurse, you will not only use research for self-improvement in your clinical role, but you will also serve as a mentor to supervised nursing staff.

Therefore, you will need to be able to communicate and collaborate effectively to guide them toward resources to find research, as well as support them through the initial evidence location process. In doing so, nurses can gain access to evidence that can be analyzed and utilized to stay current on best practices. This allows them to provide safe, patient-centered care and improve patient outcomes.

For this assessment:

  • Describe your role as a baccalaureate-prepared nurse supervising clinical staff nurses with regard to communication and collaboration in locating evidence for application to a nursing practice scenario.
  • Compile a list of five online databases or other online sources (that is, websites, journals, facility policies or guidelines, et cetera) that can be used to research evidence to apply to this scenario or clinical practice issue/diagnosis and describe to which of these you would direct a nurse colleague to search for evidence.

Acquisition of the best trustworthy literature is the core of the evidence-based practice (EBP) cycle. It takes knowledge and skills to access and distinguish credible from non-credible sources. Learning is a continuous process, and diagnoses can change over time. Therefore, through EBP, nurses should always research their diagnoses and make evidence-based decisions.

In this simulated scenario, a new nurse encountered a post-operative patient with red, swollen skin around the suture site. However, he might be unable to make precise nursing and medical diagnosis for his care plan. The purpose of this paper is to describe communication strategies that I would use to encourage the nurse to research his diagnosis, where in the organization he would search for the best information, and why these sources would be the best to complete his search.

Communication Strategies to Encourage the Nurse to Research his Diagnosis

Researching the diagnosis would help this nurse make the best scientific and clinical diagnoses – both medical and nursing. This would enable him to document his care plan in a manner that other nurses would understand and carry out. I would use nurse mentoring as an overall strategy to enable this nurse to research his diagnosis.

Laurie Saletnik, DNP, RN, defined nurse mentoring as the method of imparting knowledge, offering guidance and emotional support, and cultivating and preserving a long-lasting friendship (Saletnik, 2018). I would employ various communication strategies to mentor the nurse colleague to research his diagnosis. Face-to-face demonstration of the process of researching for the diagnosis will be the most effective way.

Providing clarification, castigating any doubts the nurse would have, and answering any question he presents would encourage his participation. Showing the patient how to research his diagnosis using the institution’s resources will give him the basis to start the process for himself in his planning. In the demonstrative case, I would use my patient’s case to provide guidance.

This list is granted in order from the most useful online source. Some sources provide free access to information, while others require premium subscriptions. The institution’s library will grant access to these sources.

Why the Sources will Provide the Best Evidence

NANDA database will provide information about approved nursing diagnoses that would fit the patient’s case. The other sources are internationally recognized journal databases with access to various nursing and health-related literature items. Protocols, guidelines, books, and journals are accessible from these databases.

Cochrane Library will provide access to high-level evidence journals such as systematic reviews and metanalyses that would be used to back the diagnosis up. PubMed, JCN, and CINAHL are peer-reviewed journals that provide scholarly items and excellent search navigators for literature search (Woods et al., 2020). Multiple journal searches will be time-consuming but will provide the extensive required information.

Conclusion

Locating credible resources helps in utilizing the best available evidence. The provided list of five journal databases will help the nurse make evidence used diagnoses. This database is second in my databases’ credibility list for peer-reviewed journal publications related to chronic bronchitis.

This database has filters just like Cinahl Complete and Summon. This database allows individuals to narrow searches to suit their desired outcomes from the beginning. An individual can use two different thesauruses during the research, allowing one to get more resources in the database. The database’s main strength is that it offers resources with diversified languages hence useful when different languages are required in research. Evidence-based practices information should be put in forms accessible and usable by other people (Schliehe, 2021). This database would be the preferred database to search and retrieve peer-reviewed publications on the identified problem.

  1. Ovid Nursing Full Text PlUS

Ovid Nursing Full Text PLUS provides a wide range of databases and multi-field research. This database provides both premium and free research articles. Fewer research journals and evidence-based research articles are available in this database. The database is limited due to the filters available. However, it allows an individual to search resources in a specified time range and offers full-text journals. Despite being user-friendly, it emerges as the least helpful database when looking for research articles related to chronic bronchitis.

Conclusion

The databases evaluated in this paper are directly linked to the Capella library’s extensive database and are related to resources on evidence-based nursing practices, a medical diagnosis, or a specific medical field. The new nurse in the scenario requires concise information to be able to make appropriate decisions. The best way is to suggest databases that would be useful for the identified medical diagnosis and other medical diagnoses she might encounter going forward. Finding credible, evidence-based research can be complex. However, with credible databases, a nurse can find vast information that informs nursing practice and improves care quality.
