Summary of strengths:

The skills assessment has helped me understand and evaluate myself based on skills and knowledge pertinent to psychiatric health. I can recognize mental health illnesses from the clinical presentation of patients and perform and interpret comprehensive health history and physical findings, including laboratory findings.

More so, I can also perform a mental status assessment and a functional assessment for patients with probable mental health illnesses. I can also practice within my scope of practice with a non-judgmental attitude and empathy. According to Fox and Kilvert (2022), empathetic and non-judgmental caring allows professionals to understand patient needs and plan for them care interventions.

More so, I can assess patients and determine any need for additional assessment instruments, refer patients, and interpret the results of these tests. In addition, I can assess and reflect on my performance and progress and evaluate my performance against set goals and objectives. I can also document recommendations for psychiatric consultations when applicable. In addition, I can document any care interventions and pertinent data whenever necessary.

 Opportunities for growth:

My growth opportunities include performing more complex psychiatric nursing tasks such as differentiating pathophysiological and psychopathological conditions, performing and interpreting a psychosocial assessment and developing diagnostic reasoning skills.Conditions involving hormonal imbalances, such as thyroid anomalies and post-menopausal syndrome, may present with psychological and behavioral problems similar to psychiatric conditions (Wieland et al., 2022). Thus, differentiating between pathophysiological from psychopathological conditions is vital. I need to improve my knowledge of differentiating mental health illnesses and explaining the changes according to age. I also need to improve my knowledge and skills in developing smart goals.

More so, I should improve my skills in decision-making in ethical and legal issues and dilemmas and developing possible solutions. These areas will be the basis for the development of SMART goals. I also need to improve my skills in psychotherapy with patients and caregivers.

Caregivers need help because caring for psychiatric patients exposes them to stress, and they also need skills to care for them effectively (Moberg et al., 2022). Psychotherapy is a vital care intervention in psychiatry and advanced practice registered nurses must understand psychotherapy to effectively manage patient problems (Sadock et al., 2015).

Now, write three to four (3–4) possible goals and objectives for this practicum experience. Ensure that they follow the SMART Strategy, as described in the Learning Resources.

Week 1/2

Before embarking on any professional or academic activity, it is important to understand the background, knowledge, and experience you bring to it. You might ask yourself, “What do I already know? What do I need to know? And what do I want to know?” This critical self-reflection is especially important for developing clinical skills, such as those for advanced practice nursing.

The PRAC 6635 Clinical Skills List and PRAC 6635 Clinical Skills Self-Assessment Form, provided in the Learning Resources, can be used to celebrate your progress throughout your practicum and identify skills gaps. The list covers all necessary skills you should demonstrate during your practicum experience.

For this Assignment, you assess where you are now in your clinical skill development and make plans for this practicum. Specifically, you will identify strengths and opportunities for improvement regarding the required practicum skills. In this practicum experience, when developing your goals and objectives, be sure to keep assessment and diagnostic reasoning in mind.
