Sentinel City Recreation Paper
Recreation is a subsystem that is often ignored but dramatically affects the health of a population. Improving recreational activities increases the psychological and physical well-being of the population (Henderson, Bialeschki & Browne, 2017). Lack of recreation services can lead to significant health concerns. This paper evaluates the recreation subsystem and provides examples of how recreation can support communities and their health wellbeing.
In sentinel city, there is evidence of recreation facilities for public use. There are wide sidewalks where people are riding, others jogging while others are walking. Some of them are walking their dogs. There is a park where some older adults are seated while the children play (Sentinel City, n.d.). There is a playground where children can play.
A conversation with the Mayor revealed that there are plans to build a multifunctional sports complex. The complex will host different activities and also act as a source of revenue. The department of parks and recreation offers nutrition classes, swimming lessons, and gardening courses. Other services include kids’ summer programs and adults’ fitness programs (Sentinel City, n.d.). Recreation access is fairly adequate in the urban and rural areas.
Recreation enhances people’s physical activity, which improves their health. People are seen jogging and riding, which are activities that improve the health of the community members. Activity helps avoid health problems such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity, and obesity-related complications. A decrease in the prevalence of these preventable diseases leads to maintained productivity in the society and decreased healthcare costs (Sato et al., 2019).
Recreation activities provide a platform for educating people on healthy living. For instance, through recreation, people learn activities such as yoga and martial which promote their physical fitness. Swimming, volleyball games (whose pitches construction is underway), and soccer attract many people, making mass education more effective. Other topics such as fine skills (painting and making jewelry) can also be taught in recreation centers saving costs incurred in mass education.
Recreation enhances togetherness in any society (Sato et al., 2019). In Sentinel, adults are seen conversing outside groceries and businesses. Children are also playing together, and so are bike riders. These activities bring togetherness in the society, creates unity, and helps fight loneliness and depression secondary to social isolation. People live in harmony when they perceive unity within the society.
