SIM 432 Safety and Transportation Sentinel City Sample Paper

Safety is an issue of significant concern to a community. It impacts other areas of the population, such as the economy and productivity. Safe people are motivated to work while unsafe people are less productive. The transportation system in a city affects other areas, such as the economy and healthcare accessibility (Kotani, 2020). This paper focuses on the safety and transportation subsystem in Sentinel City and proposes interventions to improve this city’s safety and transportation system.

Observations in Sentinel City

In sentinel city, security is not available in all districts. Many patrol officers in Acer Tech and Nightingale City Square are in the streets covering business parks, sidewalks, and outside stores. However, police officers are scarce in Casper Park and Industrial heights districts. Kidnapped children at ABC daycare, a burning car, and a barricaded house with shuttered windows are just examples of insecurity in this area (Sentinel City, n.d.).

Officer Cooper in Acer Tech and Mayor Hill have essential information about security in Sentinel City. Officer Cooper says that Nightingale has the lowest crime rate, thus the safest, while Industrial has the highest crime rate (Sentinel City, n.d.). Bicycle theft and property damage are the leading crimes. Anytime, one can become a victim of violence in Sentinel City, with the highest possibility in Casper Park and Industrial Heights.

The primary means of transport are buses. However, people walk, ride bicycles and at times use train transport. Despite an extensive bus system, the buses are not accessible to disabled persons (Sentinel City, n.d.). There are enough fire hydrants. Other services available are fire extinguishers and ambulances, which respond fast to emergencies. The roads are well kept and accessible. The roads have wide sidewalks; thus, physically disabled persons can travel with ease around town.

Interventions to improve safety and transportation

There should be more police officers in Casper Park and Industrial heights. This step aims at ensuring these residents are safe at all times like their counterparts in Acer Tech and Nightingale Square. There should be a more pedestrian designated area that increases pedestrian activity while protecting them from unintentional injuries.

To improve the transport system, the buses and other means of transport should be wheelchair accessible. The buses should accommodate and provide services to physically disabled persons. Secondly, people consider speed and convenience in public transport. Creating dedicated by lanes would encourage the use of bus transport due to improved efficiency and decreased traffic congestion

Activity 11 Safety and Transportation Instructions

A community assessment begins with a basic windshield survey where each community subsystem is explored.  Explore the relationship of safety and transportation to determinants of health.

Click on the Enter Sentinel City® and continue your virtual experience by taking a bus tour of Sentinel City®.  Since this is your second tour, feel free to choose any bus speed and/or get off the bus at any time to walk around.  As you take the tour, write down your observations, specifically focusing on the following subsystem: safety and transportation.

Meet with Mayor Hill to discuss the subsystems: Safety and Transportation.  Meet with Officer Cooper in Acer Tech about neighborhood crime rates.  Compile your observations and any demographic information addressing each item listed in the first column of the rubric.  We encourage you to add other relevant characteristics you observe that may not be listed in the first column as you complete this activity.
